Canberra Australia

A Look at Canberra

A holiday to Canberra provides a unique experience and an interesting insight into the modern world. A showpiece capital city in pristine condition, Canberra is a young city with a vibrant scene and a welcoming atmosphere. Those who go there are often surprised by just how sophisticated and cultured the place is. With wide boulevards, world class shopping opportunities and attractive modern buildings, it also has an idyllic setting and it is often highly underrated.

Being a purpose built capital city, as a compromise between choosing either Sydney or Melbourne as the capital city of Australia, Canberra has a unique atmosphere and a style that cannot be found in many other places in the world. Ideal for enjoying the outdoors as well as the artistic scene, there is plenty to do here. Often underestimated, there are surprisingly few tourists considering it is the capital city.

The centre of the city is divided by the famous lake, Burley Griffin, popular for the kayaking and other outdoor sports. There is also a large central shopping and commercial area, located on the northern side of the city. The attractions are quite spread out, but being a city of only 345,000 people, it is, for the most part, easy to discover on foot.

Anyone who has the time on a visit to Australia should make the effort to visit Canberra, as it tends to have good weather year round, and something to offer everyone. One particularly good time to visit Canberra is during the beginning of February, when the National Multicultural Festival takes place. This is a fascinating selection of music and art from around the world, making it a perfect destination for a cultural visit. Canberra is also a place for those who are interested in Australia’s history and politics as well as the country’s artistic beginnings and modern history.

There are many recreational activities to take part in Canberra, such as kayaking on the lake, ballooning or cycling. A small city, it is easily manageable, and often best explored on foot.

While the city had a difficult start, damaged by political problems and the Great Depression, it is now a thriving modern town with beautiful surroundings and an extremely clean and civilized atmosphere. It also has a surprising abundance of architectural heritage and its civic and government buildings are impressive to say the least. With dozens of cultural and artistic institutions located in this place, it is also a city that attracts artists and celebrities from around the world.

Among some of the sites to visit include the Australian War Memorial and the Captain Cook Memorial. The national gallery of Australia is also located in Canberra, boasting an impressive collection of art which spans over 5000 years of history from around the world.

Another great time to visit Canberra is during the spring festival, known as Floriade, a time when the city’s parks and gardens jump into life. Especially picturesque during the spring and autumn months, this is perhaps the best time to visit the city.
